Climbing Grading

Understanding our grading

At Boulder Bloc, we use Circuit Style Grading.

Circuit-style grading involves broadening the scope of difficulty through ranges and/or overlapping grades rather than utilizing specific grades (V1, V2, etc.) These groupings of climbs are known as “Circuits”

As you scan our walls, each route will have a small colored visual marker that determines which category that route falls into. In the gym, you will be able to find charts clarifying which color belongs to which circuit. It’s also available in the adjacent graphic for your reference!

We believe that circuit-style grading is the best structure for our gym because it allows climbers to create an individual experience of difficulty rather than focusing on grade limitations, hence creating frustration and hindering progression. It also widens the range of routes that our climbers can try at any given level, allowing climbers to navigate the realm of climbing without too much pressure and mirroring a clear expectation of growth!
